Bowmore holds a singular place in Scotch whisky as the first licensed distillery on Islay, founded in 1779 by John P. Simpson, and home to the oldest whisky maturation space in the world.
Set at the centre of Islay, the distillery occupies a central role in the island’s whiskies. It has retained its own floor maltings, which account for 40% of its needs; combined with malt from the mainland, they yield a medium peated spirit.
At the heart of the distillery lie the legendary No. 1 Vaults, the world’s oldest whisky maturation warehouse, where Bowmore has been meticulously matured by its master distillers for nearly 240 years.
